4 Tips for Writing an Obituary

Writing an obituary for your loved one can be a helpful part of the healing process. Ascension and Forest Lawn Funeral Homes assist all families with this task as much as they would like. Our team will be happy to put together the obituary for you, or just guide you through the process yourself. If you choose to write one, we would love to assist you. But if you would prefer to do it on your own, below are things that might help you along the way.

Biographical info
The first bit of information to collect includes important events and contributions. You may want to include the person’s date of birth, their mother’s maiden name, place of birth, and spouse’s name. Adding things such as their place of employment and hobbies can add to the sentiment of the obituary.

Make it personal
List survivors with relatives’ names and how they are related to the deceased. List relatives with their first name, spouse’s first name in parenthesis, then surname. If the spouse’s surname is different, or the couple is not married, include the partner’s surname in the parenthesis along with their first name. If this sounds complicated, it might be best to leave it to trained professionals at Ascension and Forest Lawn. A third party can be sympathetic enough to help and still dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s.

Special messages and photos
Some families elect to put in the obituary “in lieu of flowers” please make a donation to their loved one’s favorite charity. Others add a section that says “special thanks to” and they name a few people that were especially helpful in the person’s life, or end of life. In addition, adding a photo on the announcement is strongly encouraged and adds a nice, personal touch.
